Recognizing the importance of early detection, the TRICARE Management Activity recently changed its policy by adding coverage for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) screening for women at high risk of developing breast cancer. Anyone who meets the criteria for an MRI breast screening will be covered by TRICARE retroactive back to March 1, 2007.
TRICARE will use the American Cancer Society's clear guidelines for defining high risk. Breast cancer is the third most common cancer among TRICARE beneficiaries and the second most common cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States. If any qualified beneficiaries received this care on or after March 1, 2007, and it was denied, they can resubmit their claim for reimbursement.
